Renaissance Revival: The Timeless Sounds of Giovanni Gabrieli

Duration: 75 min
Features organ
Original compositions, organ improvisations, arrangements
Conductor: Mikk Üleoja

The National Male Choir has long performed and recorded the à cappella choral music of Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabrieli. In this programme, their voices are joined by an improvsing organist Ene Salumäe, bringing Gregorian chant alongside Gabrieli’s instrumental and multi-choir works — originally composed with the spatial design and acoustics of St. Mark’s Church in Venice in mind. Once the organist performs, the choir changes its position in the church from altar to the sides, from sides to the back of the church. In this concert, the music resonates across the venue, offering a glimpse of the immersive sound experience of the 16th century cathedral.
