Singing into Space
Duration: 60 min
A cappella
Conductor: Mikk Üleoja
Singing into Space brings together two Italian choral composers: Giovanni Gabrieli, a master of late-Renaissance multi-choir music, and Giovanni Bonato (b. 1961), a long-time creative partner of the Estonian National Male Choir. Both share a deep fascination with the interplay of space and sound. Gabrieli, organist at St. Mark’s Church in Venice, drew inspiration from the architecture of the sanctuary, where opposing balconies offered ideal conditions for double-choir writing. In Bonato’s work, by contrast, the spatial dimension is woven directly into the structure of the music itself.
The compositions of these two remarkable figures enter into a compelling dialogue, where the polyphony of the Venetian Golden Age meets the sonic and spatial experimentation of contemporary choral music. Singing into Space is captured on the Estonian National Male Choir’s album, released in October 2025 on the Toccata Classics label.
